According to Pandit Pandya, there was a forest of billy trees in the temple area. People started seeing Shivlings and temples here when trees were cut down in this forest 600-700 years ago. It was called Bilkeshwar Mahadev Temple because of its location in the Billy Tree Forest. The importance of this temple is very high as it is located on the banks of the river Yamuna. Yatra was also held here during the month of Shravan, but this time travel has been banned.

पंडित पांड्या के अनुसार मंदिर क्षेत्र में बिली वृक्षों का जंगल था। 600-700 साल पहले जब इस जंगल में पेड़ काटे गए थे तब लोगों ने यहां के शिवलिंग और मंदिरों को देखना शुरू किया था। बिली ट्री फॉरेस्ट में स्थित होने के कारण इसे बिल्केश्वर महादेव मंदिर कहा जाता था। यमुना नदी के तट पर स्थित होने के कारण इस मंदिर का महत्व बहुत अधिक है। श्रावण के महीने में यहां यात्रा भी होती थी, लेकिन इस बार यात्रा पर प्रतिबंध लगा दिया गया है।

बिल्केश्वर मंदिर का विशेष आकर्षण शिवलिंग की अद्भुत सजावट है। यहां शिवलिंग को चंदन और केसर से सजाया गया है। ऐसा माना जाता है कि अगर कोई भक्त लगातार 40 दिनों तक मंदिर में दर्शन और पूजन करता है, तो उसकी सभी मनोकामनाएं पूरी हो सकती हैं।
